The Beginning

The H & C Studebaker blacksmith shop opened in 1852 at the corner of Michigan and Jefferson Streets in what is now the heart of downtown South Bend, Indiana. Henry and Clement Studebaker's blacksmith shop would turn into the Studebaker Manufacturing Company in 1868, and would eventually become the largest wagon manufacturer in the world. Studebaker would also be the only manufacturer to successfully switch from horse-drawn to gasoline powered vehicles.

THERE ARE MANY THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO CHANGE YOUR FRONT SUSPENSION.
YOUR SUSPENSION KNOWLEDGE IS VERY IMPORTANT . THE AVERAGE "DO IT YOURSELFER" SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT THIS CHANGE OVER. THERE ARE MANY SO CALLED "ROD BUILDERS" WHO ARE REALLY ASSEMBLERS AND TRUTHFULLY DON"T KNOW EITHER. IF IT DOESN"T JUST FALL TOGETHER, THEY ARE LOST. THESE SUSPENSION COMPONENTS ARE DESIGNED FOR STUDE C&K BODIES. ALTHOUGH SUSPENSIONS ON ALL 51 THROUGH 66 AVANTI II THROUGH 76 ARE THE SAME, THERE MAY BE CLEARANCE PROBLEMS ON THE NON C&K BODIES. THE DISTANCE FROM THE FRONT WHEEL CENTERS TO THE FIREWALL BECOMES LESS IN SHORTER WHEELBASE CARS. THE ENGINE IS PUSHED FORWARD OVER THE FRONT CROSSMEMBER. THIS CAN CAUSE OIL PAN CLEARANCE PROBLEMS OVER THE RACK & PINION. FOR AN APPROXIMATE LOCATION SEE ENCLOSED DRAWING. IT IS BETTER TO ALTER YOUR OIL PAN THAN TO CHANGE THE SUSPENSION GEOMETRY.

HERE ARE FEW OTHER THINGS TO THINK ABOUT.

THIS SUSPENSION HAS THE CAPABILITY OF TURNING 33 DEGREES WITH A STOCK SIZE TIRE AND WHEEL (7.10 X 15 ). DIFFERENT SIZE TIRES WILL AFFECT THE TURNING CIRCLE.

TIRE AND WHEEL SIZE : THIS FRONT SUSPENSION PROPERLY INSTALLED LOWERS YOUR CAR ABOUT 2" AND NARROWS YOUR FRONT TREAD WIDTH ABOUT AN INCH. IF YOU USE 15" WHEELS, YOU CAN"T HAVE MORE THAN 3 1/4" BACK SPACING.
EXHAUST MANIFOLDS OR HEADERS : YOU STILL HAVE TO CLEAR YOUR EXHAUST WITH YOUR STEERING.
STEERING COLUMN : IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE YOUR ORIGINAL COLUMN, ONCE YOU CUT IT FROM YOUR STEERING BOX THERE IS NO LOWER SUPPORT. UP TO ABOUT 1956 OR 1957, THE HORN WIRE RAN DOWN THE CENTER OF THE COLUMN. IT WILL NOT WORK ONCE THE COLUMN IS CUT. THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE COLUMN AND RACK & PINION REQUIRES PLANNING AND GOOD PRODUCTS. MODERN TILT COLUMNS ARE RECOMMENDED.
BRAKES : YOU NEED A DUAL MASTER CYLINDER FOR YOUR BRAKE SYSTEM. ON C&K BODIES, IF YOU ARE KEEPING YOUR BRAKE CYLINDER UNDER THE FLOOR, YOU WILL NEED TO PURCHASE A SPECIAL BRACKET FOR A MODERN MASTER CYLINDER. YOU WILL ALSO NEED SOME SORT OF RESIDUAL AND PROPORTIONING VALVES. I SUGGEST YOU CONVERT TO A FIREWALL MOUNTED BRAKE SYSTEM.

THE PROBLEMS EXPERIENCED BY MOST NOVICE ASSEMBLERS ARE DUE TO INCORRECT SPRING RATES. IF YOU ARE KEEPING YOUR STUDE ENGINE THE STOCK SPRINGS WILL WORK FINE. IF YOU ARE PUTTING A SMALL BLOCK CHEVY  OR FORD ENGINE IN YOUR LARK OR AVANTI, YOU CAN USE THE STOCK SPRINGS FOR A 65- 66 STUDE. IF YOU HAVE A 53-55 C&K BODY, WE HAVE THE SPRING SPECIALLY MADE WHICH WILL WORK. ON 56-64 C&K"S YOU NEED A HEAVIER SPRING BUT LIGHTER THAN THE STUDE 6 CYLINDER SPRING. DIFFERENT ENGINES CREATE RIDE HEIGHT PROBLEMS. MOST WILL REQUIRE CUSTOM BUILT SPRINGS, OR YOU CAN USE OUR QA1 ADJUSTABLE SPRINGS.
NEVER CUT COILS OFF YOUR SPRINGS. FOR EVERY COIL YOU CUT YOU INCREASE THE EFFECTIVE WEIGHT OF THE SPRING BY 100LBS. IN OTHER WORDS A 280LB STUDEBAKER SPRING WITH 1 COIL CUT IS NOW A 380LB SPRING. THE MORE YOU CUT THE STIFFER THIS SPRING GETS.

ONCE YOU HAVE DONE YOUR HOMEWORK AND COLLECTED ALL YOUR PARTS, THIS JOB CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED IN A WEEKEND OR TWO, DEPENDING ON YOUR TOOLS AND SKILLS.

SOME TIPS AND POINTERS ARE INCLUDED IN THE KIT ALONG WITH SOME PHOTOS. IF YOU REQUIRE INSTRUCTIONS TO INSTALL THIS SUSPENSION KIT, YOU ARE NOT QUALIFIED AND SHOULD SEEK A PROFESSIONAL.
THE RACK IS 1 1/4" DIA. LOCATED 8 1/2" BEHIND THE CROSSMEMBER WITH ITS CENTER EVEN WITH THE PLANE OF THE TOP OF THE CROSSMEMBER.
